Al Matyasovsky Speaker Session

Monday, October 31, 2016

Last week, Net Impact hosted a Speaker Session featuring Al Matyasovsky, founder of the Veteran’s Education and Advancement Fund. VEAF is the only fund in the country that gives scholarships and funding to current and retired vets as well as their immediate families. Growing up the son of a war veteran in General Patton’s Super Sixth army, Mr. Matyasovsky was inspired to create a foundation that recognized people like his father and his family.

As a child, Al Matyasovsky and his family lived humble lives in a town known for being a “punch line”. In high school, Al Matyasovsky had a strong desire to attend college, but this dream seemed out of reach considering his family could not afford it. This was all made possible by his high school guidance counselor, who managed to pull some strings and not only help him have a chance to go to college, but help him pay for it! Today, Mr. Matyasovsky has partnered with Penn State World Campus to make this same opportunity possible for vets and their families by raising money and having 100% of the proceeds go to VEAF.

Al Matyasovsky also went on to discuss his Sustainable Development Solutions Company, his experience running Recycling Tours at the local landfill, and his sustainable projects at Penn State including Trash to Treasure, which has raised $750,000 for the United Way since the project began. Mr. Matyasovsky is on the board of directors for World Campus and a proud member of the Penn State World Campus Military Advisory Board. He is also involved in the Rotary Club of State College thanks to his friend and business partner Ray Papale.

Ray Papale, a director of the Rotary Club of State College, accompanied Al Matyasovsky at his speaker session. Mr. Papale got Al involved in the rotary club and shares the belief that those who serve should be respected, honored, and have the right to an education along with their families. His father was also a war vet.

It was a pleasure having Al Matyasovsky and Ray Papale speak to Penn State Net Impact and share their stories and passion for veterans, community service, and sustainability. We look forward to hosting another event with them very soon!
